Review: Dookey Dash - Yuga Labs & Faraway

TLDR:

  • Smooth player onboarding

  • Great graphics and animations

  • Clear progression

  • Simple core loop

  • Strangely 18+

  • A good example of the genre is unclear how unique

How to play

  • Playable on mobile [in 6 countries]

  • Free to play with in-app purchases

Game Loop

  • The core loop is an endless runner

  • You are an ape riding a “vehicle” dodging obstacles through the sewer

    Best Score
  • Hitting the edges is okay, but if you hit obstacles your run ends

  • The sewer is full of rubbish, and hitting the rubbish “bounces” you in different directions.

  • The amount of “bounce” depends on the size of the rubbish.

  • This loss of control makes it harder to dodge the obstacles

  • You have a boost that you can use to speed up and also crash through wooden walls blocking the way through the sewer

  • In amongst the rubbish are fragments; collecting these increases your score

  • Your score is also increased as you travel a further distance

  • Whilst in the sewer you can also collect boosters, a magnet, a speed slow-down, and a “power start”

  • There are two modes, one is an arcade mode with the aim of completing various challenges.

  • The second is the championship mode, with the aim of getting the highest score

  • Both modes cost energy, which refills over time

  • Outside the core loop, there are battle pass unlocks, skins, emotes, and other meta items to keep you engaged.

    Star progression
  • You can spend money on the battle pass, energy, and other boosters in the game.

Game feel

  • The initial player onboarding is exceptionally smooth

  • before doing anything else you are straight into a playthrough

  • the game then leads you through the different elements in a handy tutorial

  • the graphics and animations are executed well

  • I did find that the “bounce” of objects can be slightly inconsistent

  • The controls are easy, and my only complaint would be sometimes the double tap to boost didn’t work (skill issue?)

  • The meta progression with 2 separate battle passes gives plenty of reasons to keep coming back

  • The energy pool plus the rewards on the battle pass gives you enough play time for it to be sticky

  • it did have an 18+ warning before playing, not sure why; I feel it would have done well with younger audiences as well; any “rudeness” doesn’t actually add to the game

  • Talking about not adding to the game, the BAYC IP does nothing negative or positive for the game.

    Character selection
  • The runs have a playtime that allows you to easily dip in and out

  • With the leaderboard, it does have a good sense of competition

Rating

  • After all my Yuga bashing, it is a good game

  • Engaging core loop and graphics

  • Plenty of meta-progression

  • Pointlessly 18+

  • Solid execution of the genre

  • Would recommend playing

Rating Card: Enjoyed, would recommend pla

Web3 integration

  • Unclear
