“Command the Past, Forge the Future in Storm Warfare: The Next-Gen Collectible Card Game.”
TLDR:
Engaging animations, sounds and voice acting
Intuitive gameplay for those experienced in the genre
There are enough minor tweaks to make it unique
Plenty of decks built for depth of strategy
Some decks feel lacklustre
How to play
Open Beta
Playable on PC
Game Loop
The format will be familiar to those experienced in the TCG genre
Before battling, you need to pick your commander
Each commander has its own special, such as adding a +2 attack to a tank; they also fall into one of the five types.
Next, you need to construct your deck
You have different types of cards, units, events, and heroes.
The unit cards have defence, attack, and sometimes a special
These specials proc at different points in the game, ranging from attacking on deployment to healing the commander on taking damage.
You then have event cards; these can attack, apply buffs or debuffs
Finally, you have your hero cards - which have a wide range of specials but are placed on the board like a unit.
The five types are aircraft, infantry, navy, support and tank
They are also split across different forces: the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, Japan, and The Soviet Union.
Now that you have your commander and deck, you can launch a pvp 1v1 battle.
The battle occurs on a board, split in half, with each player placing cards in their half.
The commander has their health shown
Your aim to kill the enemy commander
This is achieved by strategic use of your cards
With each turn, the number of command points you have increased.
Each card requires command points to be played.
You also draw an extra card each turn.
Outside of the battles, the game also sets missions to complete. These encourage you to explore more of the game rather than settling for one deck.
Game feel
There are plenty of pre-built decks to choose from, making it far more accessible than creating one from scratch.
Whilst the layout of the boards doesn’t change, the themes do, and with their dynamic animations, it makes it a lot more engaging than playing on a flat board
Playing each card has an animation and voice-over, both of which are high quality.
When attacking, you also see the opponent’s cards “react”; this feedback makes it feel more like a battle.
The variety of cards and commanders gives you plenty of depth to strategize with
I did find that some pre-built decks felt a little lacklustre.
Rating
Think it makes a great addition to the genre
The depth of cards and commanders gives you plenty to play with
The theming and execution are great, and I can see it playing well with history buffs
Some of the decks are a little weak, but that’s a common challenge for all TCGS
I’d recommend it, and I could see it becoming some people’s full personality.
