This week, our community took a spin through Waddle Wars, a cute-but-deadly tower defense roguelike starring penguins, perks, and projectile chaos. Developed by Cozy Labs, this mobile title mixes cozy charm with increasingly intense battles. But did our testers find themselves waddling back for more, or slipping off the iceberg?
How long did players play?
4+ Hours – 4 players
2–4 Hours – 7 players
1–2 Hours – 6 players
< 1 Hour – 2 players
Most players stuck around for a couple of hours, with a surprisingly strong showing from the 4+ hour crowd. Not bad for a lightweight mobile roguelike.
Did questing and rewards encourage continued play?
Yes – 12 players
No – 7 players
While a majority were nudged forward by the questing system, a good chunk still felt it wasn't the main draw. The charm of the game itself did a lot of the heavy lifting.
"Loving this cute game that needs aim and strategy to score higher!"
Gameplay Breakdown
Ease of Access (Avg: 8.8)
Very few complaints here. Most players found it easy to jump in and start waddling.
Controls (Avg: 8.6)
The control system was mostly praised, though not universally loved:
"Game was okay but the aiming was a pain in the arse... add an aiming function where you can actually see where you're aiming instead of guessing lol."
Graphics (Avg: 8.6)
The cozy aesthetic landed well, even with players who were otherwise mixed:
“It’s a friendly game, especially for new users.”
Core Game Loop (Avg: 8.2)
Engagement was strong, especially from those who pushed into higher waves.
“I can't pass the 25th wave lol.”
That said, a few players flagged the loop as repetitive or lacking in variety.
Story (Avg: 6.7)
Story came in as a weaker point—expected in a roguelike format.
“Was there a story?”
Unit and Upgrade Variations (Avg: 8.2)
Upgrade mechanics got praise, though some players were confused:
“I didn’t quite understand the upgrade mechanics. If I got a common upgrade and then got the same one again, was it still an upgrade?”
Notable Feedback
“The game is fun and challenging.”
“A bit boring after a while.”
“Would be better with visible aiming.”
“I played more after killing 3,000 enemies.”
Final Thoughts
Waddle Wars delivered a charming and chaotic defense experience that resonated with most players. Its cozy visuals and quick session gameplay made it easy to pick up, though aiming quirks and some mid-game repetition were noted. The perk system and upgrade paths offered satisfying depth for those who stuck with it.
Would we recommend it? Yes – especially for fans of tower defense and short-session roguelikes. The penguins have a lot of fight in them.
